Detergents are made using petroleum and petrochemicals.
Most household cleaning products – including the plant based and plant derived ones - are made with synthetic detergents. You’ll find these synthetic detergents in laundry products, all-purpose surface cleaners, dishwashing products, hand washes and more. The plant derived ones show up on labels as sulfates, ethoxylates, glucosides, betaines and oxides and while they include some natural ingredients, they are made using petroleum and petrochemicals in a complex industrial process.
Here’s how common synthetic detergents are listed on labels:
Sulfates Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Coco Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Ethoxylates Laureth-6, Laureth-7, Lauryl Ethoxylate, Alcohol Ethoxylate
Glucosides Decyl Glucoside, Lauryl Glucoside, Coco Glucoside, Alkyl Glucoside
Betaines Cocoamidopropyl Betaine
Oxides Lauramine Oxide, Cocamidopropylamine Oxide
Each one is made using one or more of the following petrochemicals derived from petroleum:
Methanol used in formaldehyde production and as a gasoline additive
Ethylene a raw material used in plastic production
Toluene a paint thinner and glue solvent
Propylene a raw material used in plastic production
Propanol an industrial solvent and gasoline additive
Soap is different. Soap is made using simple ingredients and simple chemistry that’s been around for thousands of years. You can make it in your kitchen if you have time and patience.
Here’s what we use to make our soap:
Coconut oil and olive oilnaturally occurring oils
Sodium chloride and sodium hydroxideused to make solid soap
Potassium chloride and potassium hydroxideused to make liquid soap
